I wonder if one more pass on your "paint stroke" background might bring it that extra little step of savvy? A texture (like painted on Canson paper)? Or a rougher, more "brushy" broken perimeter? Just something to "knock it back" that tiniest bit.
Could Jeff's non-functional Photoshop brushes be of use here?
One thing fo' sho': you can't miss with a Ranjo design (or a Schmitz, fer that matter).

Oh, yeah, I haven't figured out how to get that gauche type backdrop in Flash yet.... it's only a matter of time, though.... Moohoohaahaahaa!
