Champion

Howdy. Here are a couple of colored pages from my graphic novel "The Life , Death, and Life of Michael Midas: Champion." Jonny Rench did the colors and Jordan Gorfinkel is the writer. It's supposed to be out in February from Devil's Due Press.
It was kinda done in a pseudo "widescreen" format. Most frames go border to border. I wasn't allowed to do traditional layouts or break any of the panels in any of the flashback sequences (which is 95% of the book). It proved... challenging let's say.
They're going to release it in landscape format which will be cool. Every page was designed initially to have a gutter placed running through the center of it so it could possibly be chopped in half and positioned lengthwise side by side. This means the 128 page book is now doubled to 256 pages. It hilariously makes me look productive.
Hope you enjoy. If anyone is near Ellis punch him in the stomach for me. Thanks!

  1. Incredible. I'll buy it.

I tried to decode the traditional Benefiel comic captions...Tell me how I did....

"I refuse to shake my groove thing until I get the OK from my Mom."

"I want you to love me for who I'm not but will ever hope to be."

"Something smells fishy, wait, it's my skirt."

  3. Thanks my good man. Nobody did the inks. It's just my very finished pencils with colors added. You were close on the quotes, I'll have to check my copies for clarification.

  6. Spectacular, Scott! Outstanding work... your best work by far, I think! I really like the open line work. None of that fussy crosshatching that is such a crutch for so many comic artists (and guys like me!). The colors complement line work well. Overall, a terrific package.

  7. Congratulations, Scott! Beautiful work! I love the look of "just" pencils with color added; and the color palette does your artwork justice. My favorite panels are the skyscrapers (awesome perspective) and the underwater house -- the two most vertical, interestingly -- but several of your other panels (on pgs 42 & 55) solve the challenges of the format in very creative and satisfying ways. I'll stand in line with the others for a copy as well.

  10. I agree with every positive comment I've read. What strikes me most, as silly as this is, is the garden hose on the house. That kind of detail adds so much, and is nothing that anyone would ask the artist to include. I remember some panel Scott did a billion years ago where the characters were outside some house in some foreign country and the door had a culturally accurate front door lantern.

  11. Thanks for the comments everybody! It was a bear to do but I'm glad I was able to finish the whole thing and not have any "background assists" or some such nonsense. Again, it's supposedly due out around Valeantine's Day, I'll let you know if there are any changes.
