"Thompsonian Supper"

This post shows in startling clarity the un-imitatable nature of Ron's "Thompsonian Sketches."

Look how bad this looks compared to Ron's!

--and I really tried!

Ah, blessed artistic diversity.

(I figure posting pale imitations might provoke R.T. into sharing more of his work....)

My Tuesday contribution

Here's the latest of my single panel cartoons that I've been posting for a while now... click on the title for more!

Project

These are some sketches for one of my projects. They are inspired by some old-time Halloween decorations that I have seen. I'm going to customize a couple of Pumpkin Head vinyl toys by Rose Art called Color Blanks. They come with markers and stickers for customizing but I'm going to use acrylic paint. As soon as I decide which designs to use.

Buddy, Schlub, and the Queen of Outer Space

The top guy looks like Buddy, a friend of my Dads ( who I didn't like much )
Second guy came about when I was watching something I don't remember.
Third thing is what the Alien helmet design looked like in Curtis Harrington's low low budget film Queen Of Outer Space.

Flurrious

Angry gamblers. From "Flight to Fury" again--sorry man, I just haven't scanned anything new! I'll get on it....

True Grit

One of my favorite childhood movies. This looks good - maybe even great. I hear this is closer to the book than the John Wayne version.

State Fair couple

Actually drew this after the Channel 101 show in Little Tokyo. Having a giant Sapparo beer with Kali and a couple of her friends.

Finally found a title that's been nagging me

I read this back in 98 or 99. Enjoyed it and 2 years ago thought to myself, I'd like to find that book and read it again. Was it called....The Godmakers?
I look that up, the covers seem all wrong and I'm CERTAIN that Frank Herbert didn't write it. The scenario also seems off from what I remember it being about. So it became an on again - off again obsession to find that book.
Finally gave the title The Godmakers another shot and found in Google images the cover I was looking for. It is indeed written by Frank Herbert. My brain. Such putty.

Rude Dude

It's better if you see it in widescreen format. Click the link to see it. Looks pretty interesting.

The rare confluence of time, space, and privacy plus someone I know needing a teenage wolf character gave me the opportunity to use my pencils and computer and finally post something.

FLIGHT TO FURY

I think I got this movie from Ellis a million years ago--got it on VHS. Called "Flight to Fury," a weird melange of a flick that combines a serial murderer, Asian-American tensions, prostitution, gambling, international spying, and a plane crash that leads to a group survival situation. I did some drawings form on it on slow mo a while ago.

It's main interest to the modern viewer is the role of the genial American serial killer, played by a very young Jack Nicholson.I think I'll post a few more drawings on the Brush Pen Breakfast blog.

A VERY Lost Saturday Morning Treasure

The Legend of Calamity Jane was an animated television series produced by Canal+ and France 3. The series followed the adventures of Calamity Jane. The series was gritty, much like Batman: The Animated Series and had a very European animation style. It aired in France and Canada from 1997 to 1998 and in Portugal in 2002.

In the United States, three episodes were aired on The WB in 1997. The WB gave the series heavy promotion, but quietly pulled it from their line-up after only three episodes. No reason was ever given (although the show's violence was the most likely plausible explanation). It was promised on Warner Bros.' website that the show would return later in the year, and that Superman: The Animated Series would be filling in for its timeslot, but this proved to be untrue.

I really LOVED this show with what few episodes that aired. I told myself back then that it was TOO violent and adult for the braindead kids who would sop up Pokemon. But I found this to be stylish and VERY European comic story telling like Blueberry. I wish it was on DVD but I'll have to suffice with the YouTube stuff till then.

Rick still draws!

Yup, I actually still draw from time to time.  Not too much for work, but I draw my little cartoons, Nearsighted Comics, and after reading a compilation of Kirby Demon comics that I checked out from the library, I was inspired to do this drawing.  I know that the little Kirby dashes are just sort of tacked on, bu I still like them.

I never read these comics when they were originally published, but I was reading other "weird adventure" from the time... Werewolf by Night, House of Secrets, Ghosts, Plop, The Witching Hour, etc.

The Demon himself had some little ruffles at the ends of his sleeves and a raggedy edge to the cape in the first issue.  After that first appearance those element pretty much disappeared, so I have recreated him in the manner in which he typically appeared.

Kirby was a terrific yarn teller... he not only created the Demon, but had a whole back story (he's the loyal servant of Merlin) friends to save and to save him, and some outrageous villains.  Who else but Kirby would have the audacity to name a villain Count Von Evilstien?

Randolph Loves Me

Rick Randolph sent this to me. I may cycle it into my profile pic on Facebook. Speaking of Facebook.. Did you hear it has surpassed Google and its interests as the place more people are spending web time.

Now I can die happy. Depicted above are the LP and Single for the new Peter Peter Hughes album "Fangio," just released last week. That's right--I've now done album art--for vinyl.

Vinyl!!

This is the thing now among the musical cognoscenti--pressing yr latest opus on limited edition vinyl. It's all digital downloads or this. A trend about as unexpected as it is cool.

It's two colors (black + red) silkscreened onto "chipboard" sleeves. And I did the benday dots to get a range of dark reds/browns out of the two colors, and it totally worked! Those old comic book dudes were onto something....I was pretty happy with the art when I sent it off for the printers, but once we were handed the physical album/single I was blown away by how cool they turned out. Nothing like the smell of fresh ink and the feel of the cardboard in your hand. In this world of virtual production, a physical object seems stunningly "real."

Some One Deleted the Blog?

I undeleted it. So there. Some butter finger administrator.

I felt like I had lost a friend. Or at least someone who owed me money.

Confession is good for the soul. Who done it?

Two new concept paintings

Hey kidlinks! I've been trying to fill out my scottbenefiel.com portfolio site with more concept art pieces so here are the two latest additions. I did some character designs for a guy who had the rights to Edgar Rice Burroughs' "Pirates of Venus" license and wanted to create a live action movie of it, the girl is the main female lead named Duare. The other painting is of the Gladiator beast I drew recently. I think I had better success with the beastie, but she works out okay too I guess. I keep learning more and more each painting so hopefully I'll have some newer, BETTER stuff soon. Let me know what you think please!
