I recommend Gentlemen Broncos to you if you haven't seen it. By the same guy that did Napoleon Dynamite. The opening credits use old sci fi book covers with new text superimposed. As good as the movie is, it may be the best part of the movie
Jim Gorham and I know the guy who did the art for the Sam Rockwell cover. David Lee Anderson. We all used to go to dinky little comic cons and sci fi conventions in Oklahoma in the late 70s.
The title takes you to the page that assembles the covers into a group and compares to some of the old covers.
I added a cover Tom refers to in the comments and Doomsman that I refer to.
Thanks to Jason Weesner for giving me the original link in a thread on facebook.
ReplyDeleteMost of the covers were by Kelly Freas
ReplyDeleteYour post inspired me to order an old 9162 pulp sci-fi paperback from my youth. It's an "Ace Double" book, "Cosmic Checkmate" on one side, flip it over and you can read "King of the Fourth Planet" on the other. I loved it as a nine-year-old. What will I think of it now?

I loved the old Ace double books. Especially when they had Frazetta art. That one looks cool.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't as precocious as you Tom. I probably was 13 or 14 when I read Doomsman by Harlan Ellison.
The ending made this never forgotten visual etch in my brain. The main character duped by the CIA type group that runs him, has his eyes triggered into death lasers. Like an out of control Cyclops X-Man.
If you make the mistake of trying to get Harlan Ellison to autograph these old things, he tears them up in front of your horrified eyes and pays you about 5 bucks for it.
The jpg of Doomsman is a scan of my personal copy by the way. Heh Heh. You'll never be rid of all of them Harlan!
ReplyDeleteHarlan strikes me as possibly the most-hated man in all of geekdom, and deservedly so.
ReplyDeleteRonnie, Harlan confronts people but it's mostly schtick. Watch Dreams With Sharp Teeth, (insta view on netflix now) especially his kitchen table talk with Neil Gaiman. He's a teddy bear. But he would tear that book in two.
