Hulk head study



Just a quick ZBrush 3 Hulk head study using the Cintiq. ZBrush 3 is great - so many fun and handy tools. A lot of stuff I'd like to do differently, namely switch out the painted-on eyes with an actual eye model (that's why there's no specular sheen).

    Nice work, Dude! This doesn't feel like a lot of the over-bumpy stuff that you often see with Z-Brush images.

  3. It's a 3D sculpt, Ellis. I just took a sphere and started moving, pushing lumping,etc. Then I began painting the polys. It works just like painting a real model and it didn't take long. That whole model is maybe 3.5 hours of work. I'm definitely favoring the better sides of the model. Since it's just a sketch, the back third of the head is unfinished. I'll do a little rotational movie and post it when I get the chance.

    Six months ago, I would have given the nod to Mudbox. It has a cleaner interface, streamlined tool set (just sculpting - no painting), and artists familiar with Maya took to it like ducks to water.

    Zbrush 3 has impressed me mightily (and disappointed me as well - it's still a little unstable, even with the 3.1 release). Personally, I can get more done in Zbrush. I like the ability to do color work and the transpose tools allow artists to pose models without going into the cumbersome task of rigging. There are also some really good (but kind of awkward to use) re-topology tools in 3.

    I am curious to see what happens with Mudbox now that software giant Autodesk has aquired it. That kind of muscle will take the competition to the next level, easily.

  4. Thanks, Rick. Actually there are some really good sculpting tools in Zbrush that greatly assist in reducing the lump-factor. Flattening brushes, scratch brushes, rake brushes, etc. I'm still learning how to use them.

    Aside from the occasional "gotcha" crashes, I really enjoy using Zbrush 3. I have hardly touched Mudbox since I bought it, but that doesn't mean I don't like it. Both are awesome apps. I just like the all-in-one tool set in Zbrush.

    I downloaded the Modo demo, but couldn't get that excited about it. For a straight-ahead poly modeler, I much prefer Silo. It can't do all the fancy stuff Modo does, but it is killer-fast for re-topology, trapping edge loops, etc. Are you a Modo guy now, Rick?

  5. No, I'm a manager guy now... I don't have too much time to do 3D myself, but we are using Modo at Centerscore... Our artists like it and it seems to be on the road to being a contender. My understanding is that Pixar has a sharing agreement with them. I saw a recent online demo of their bump-brush features and they are pretty nifty.

    And you can't beat the price!
