True Grit

One of my favorite childhood movies. This looks good - maybe even great. I hear this is closer to the book than the John Wayne version.

  1. I love the Charles Portis book. The Coen Bros have a chance to make you laugh your guts out and break your heart if they do the material justice.

  2. I've watched it about 30 times now. Gets better every time. Mattie was 14 years old. And Rooster was more a man in his late 40s vs the old man Wayne had to portray. Brolin looks great as Ned Pepper. Matt Damon has to be the weak link if there is one. The womans silhouette at the end of the trailer has information for a reader of the book. It looks like it will be faithful to the most gut wrenching part.

  3. Barry Pepper is playing Ned Pepper. I bet they do a scary good job messing his lip up. He gets to do everyone's favorite line. "I call that bold talk for a one eyed fat man."

  4. I can't stop watching the trailer. This is going to be good. We'll have to see if Damon delivers.

  5. I watched the John Wayne movie years ago and liked it. I've never read the book and I don't remember all the characters. I'm confused by your third post that says, "Barry Pepper is playing Ned Pepper" because your second post says Brolin plays Ned Pepper. What am I not getting?

I love the Coen Brothers. Have to say this looks pretty good.

  6. I was wrong about Brolin. Sorry. He's the more important role of Tom Chaney, the awful guy that kills Mattie's Dad. With the powder burn on his face. He actually has a lot of aliases and is also why Le BEouf , Matt Damon, joins the party. He killed a Teaxs politician under his real ame. But to Mattie he is Tom Chaney.

  8. Thanks for the necktie link Ellis. I've heard of the Peruvian Necktie in the jiu-jitsu context, but for a second there I thought I was going to see some fancy Western Hangman's knot from the True Grit movie. I'll give this hold a try when I go re-join the studio. I've been on a break for a couple of months.

  9. I just remember ineptly trying to demonstrate it in your backyard about 2 or 3 years ago. Saw the link while surfing today.

  10. Well, maybe you have to be Peruvian to do it.

  13. I guess I'll be the wet blanket on this one... I've never been into westerns or the Coens. I know that's sacrilege, but I don't get the Coen Bros at all. But then again I don't really like movies where the criminals are the protagonists... I feel the same way about gangster movies. The Coens' films are all about crime, which I don't find very interesting. Now detectives that investigate crimes, that's a different story... ;)

I will say that this looks like a great role for Bridges.
