I'm an ex Simi Valley native so I've seen these fires up close a couple of times. But always with Santa Anna winds. This still wind makes all that smoke pile up like a cumulus cloud. The time lapse makes it look like Mt St Helens.
I saw Nico's photo from your Neighborhood Kali. Awesome to look at. Hard on the lungs I imagine.

Yesterday I saw it all the way in the distance from Carlsbad. It was affecting the sun down here as well. I had no idea that it was the LA fires. Weird.
