My First Comic ... Ever.

In the DVD I mentioned below, the Comic Book series from The Write Environment ... Mark Waid mentioned that he had a copy of the very first comic he ever read. I took that to heart and went out on Ebay and found a copy of the July issue of Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom, the one where he battles a mysterious outbreak of prehistoric creatures. I purchased it prior to boarding the SS Barrett en-route to Hawaii where my family was moving. My mom said each of us kids could pick one thing to take on board the ship. Well, that was what I chose. I read that comic about fifty times during the three day voyage, mostly to spite my brother who purchased, built, and played with a Revelle model car kit.

I shall treasure this copy forever.

But I challenge EVERY ONE OF YOU, and that means every one ... to jot down the name and possibly the issue number or month of your own first comic, if you can remember, that is. This should be good.

    BTW: this issue cost 99 cents plus shipping ... about $4 total. Sometimes memories aren't priceless. ;-)

    I probably owned that comic. I was a big Dr Solar fan. My first comic is a lost memory. Probably something with a DC line up. Maybe a Kirby Challengers of The Unknown. I already have those the way I want them. In that big BW showcase format.
    The comic I most remember I did get via EBAY. I posted this about it on my own Blog...

    That's great that you were able to find your first comic book (and get a good deal on it!) I don't remember the first comic book I ever read. It was probably one of those kite safety pamphlets with Rocky and Bullwinkle that were given out in grade school.

    A fun game, and one I wish I had an answer for. But my older brother had a big box of comics,(about 500 or so I'd guess)and as a very young kid I was looking at them and enjoying them before I could even read. When I got a little older my brother outgrew comic book reading and I traded my half-ownership in our lawn croquet set for this big box of comics. So I acquired a collection all at once. Some standout comics that I remember reading over and over were "101 Dalmations", "Donald in Mathmagic Land", a Superman (or Action) comic entitled "Bizarro Meets Frankenstein", "Dennis the Menace in Hollywood", and on and on...

    I bet one of the very first I remeber i couldn't afford. The one with the JLA vs the Starro starfish character. Very famous cover. Probably highly sought.
    Powdered Toast Man vs Spiderman would probably be cheaper.

    This was my first comic I can remember having for myself. The actual story appeared on the syndicated Marvel Super Heroes cartoon show that same year. I saw it a local market and begged my mom to buy it for me. Cap fan ever since. Got some used Gold Key PHANTOM comics soon after that at a fleamarket.

    Never had the sense to buy them again but boy I loved those covers by George Wilson. He did the Avon paperbook covers too.

    Hey, does Powdered Toast Man vs. Spider-Man really exist? I want to see the cover. Oh wait, I got some Google hits. Apparently it is actually Ren & Stimpy #6.

    Who knows what the first comic I read was... I think the first one I bought for myself was a Josie and the Pussycats one-off that Archie did. I liked the cartoon a lot, so this seemed like a natural to me at the time. I think I got it to occupy myself to kill time when we were flying from one island to another on our trip to Hawaii.

    Dennis the Menace: Christmas around the World was also a really early one I read, but I don't think I bought that one for myself... it was a gift, I think.
