I was starting by just pushing proportion. I made a rectangle that was wider than it was tall and then tried to fit a Hulk in it. Part of my project to get better at pushing and exagerrating. Making him hairy was just having him on the page as a random Sam Kieth notion crossed my mind. The caption came last, thinking about when I was a kid and my Dad "asked" to have his back scratched.
I like hearing the story behind the picture, especially when it reveals something about the artist that I didn't know before.
Of course there's the occasional instance where it's more fun to preserve the mystery. Here's one of my favorite artists whose drawings are so strangely compelling, I don't want any explanations at all: Jim Woodring

Thanks for that link Tom. Jim Woodring is definitely a unique talent. Great characters that make you queazey and disoriented.
