Cork Tribute (Work-In-Progress)

For a long time now I've been wanting each of us to do a Cork tribute drawing for Scott ("tribute drawing"? Izzat what the comic pros call it?). Cork number 50 seemed a worthy milestone to comemmorate, but alas, I was too slow....

Then Ellis posted his "Grannie's Shack" monologue, and something clicked....

I'm not done yet...I think you'll get a chuckle out of the finished product.

In the meantime: Scott & Ellis (& Grannie Goodson), I salute you!

  1. Wow... You really need to start working for Mad Magazine. It's Jack Davis meets Frank Frazetta drawing Al Capp's Li'l Abner.

I hope "Work-In-Progress" means your going to give it the full color treatment.

  2. This is a portfolio piece for sure. I would buy any comic book that featured this level of loving for illustration. Topic or story wouldn't matter

  3. And it is uncanny how close you got to Granny's shack. Of course I guess a shack is a shack. There was a big tree that had been lightning struck right next to the shack.
The drybrush is one of those things that someone that becomes addicted to "un-do" will probably never master

  4. "The story wouldn't matter"??

I think this one will be called....The Thing on the Porch!!

Glad you guys like it--once you get an image in your head, you have to see it through. It's to celebrate Cork--and Ellis!

  7. Thanks Rick!

    Ell, the drawing is 10x10.

And oh yes, it will become a cover--just you wait!

  8. I sent Doug T a link to this post. He hadn't been exposed to Cork, so I sent him a link to Scott ( and Zana"s) page.
His comment, "He draws his women with too small of a rack. Come on! This is a comic book!"
I hadn't been to the , "just Cork" comicpress page in a while. Beautiful looking page. Great job Scott, Zana.

  13. Thanks Ronnie!

Y'know what's funny--I looked at this after I posted it and realized I hadn't given Cork her Benefield-sized chest--it's first of my fixes for the final!

  14. Just wanted you to know, Marty, that this made my entire week.

  15. I JUST NOW saw this! This is GREAT! Thanks Marty for taking a stab at Cork! That cracks me up. It looks like Sam's about to end up as vittles, poor sap. So, this is Ellis' childhood or something? Poor sap. I think I'm going to add the finished version to the Cork blog at some point, Marty, with your permission.

Ellis, thanks for passing along Cork to Doug Tenapel. I appreciate your gooey support!

    Ranjo... just get out.

  16. Scott! SO glad you like it. Hey, this is yours to use however you'd like!

I'm hoping every TAG person takes a crack at a CORk tribute (hint--just don't spend as much time on yours as I have on mine--but I couldn't resist).

And wait 'til you see the color version!
